Registration for this schedule starts on 01/14/2025 and ends on 06/16/2025
Participants must be 9 years to 14 years old when the program starts.
Fusing the consciousness of slow fashion with the design of embroidery and sashiko gives us the eco-friendly and beautiful art of repairing what we already own or altering what we find second hand. Campers will learn about natural fibers, how to extend and highlight the life of worn garments, and how to make something new out of something old. Torn knees, ripped shirts, holey-tops or bottoms are all welcome here! Learn how to embrace the weakening fibers that you can't let go of or give a second life to those amazing second-hand finds. By adding mending as part of the life-cycle of your textiles, you can be comforted by them for much longer and know you're not adding to the already overwhelming textile waste in our world today. Christine Shalda is a local fiber artist and Handwork teacher at Emerson Waldorf School. She is currently immersed in a four-year Applied Arts Program at Fiber Craft Studio in New York. Christine believes in the transformative power of slow, mindful creation. She weaves together her love of natural dyeing, sewing, and knitting with a deep respect for the natural world, fostering a sense of wonder and connection in her students.
